IT hiring and tech research appears to be on the upswing. In June, the Waterloo (Ontario) Region’s tech industry launched an initiative to recruit more than 800 IT professionals to the area. Also in June, SAP AG announced plans to expand its Montreal-based research and development (R&D) facility. And to complete the trifecta, Sun Microsystems Inc. recently opened a health care IT research centre in Ottawa.

What do you do when a technology provider leaves you high and dry? Try going Zen: forgive and forget, like Bill Farkas did. Farkas is co-ordinator of the Telecommunications Technology Program at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ont. His office is located in Sheridan’s School of Computer Animation and Emerging Technologies (SCAET) building, the very scene of said abandonment. Back in the late-1990s the SCAET project was just getting started, and Sheridan sought technology partners to provide networking gear for the futuristic edifice. Recall, this was during a somewhat silly time in the IT field.

Waterloo Region deploys content management platform
The Regional Municipality of Waterloo, Ont. (Waterloo Region) recently automated its paper-based content management processes as a way to improve public accountability, a city official said Wednesday. Waterloo Region recently implemented a corporate-wide electronic document and records management (EDRM) system from content management vendor Hummingbird Ltd. Kris Fletcher, director, council and administrative services/regional clerk for the municipality said Waterloo Region is using the Hummingbird Enterprise platform as part of an effort to improve public accountability by lowering the risk of lost or unmanaged electronic and paper documents.
