A new set of third generation (3G) mobile phones should help to turn around the fortunes of Vodafone K.K., the Japanese unit of Vodafone Group PLC, its new president said on Wednesday.

The total number of subscribers to NTT DoCoMo Inc.'s third-generation (3G) cellular telephone service hit five million on Monday, the carrier said on Tuesday.

Just over 60 million people in Japan, or roughly four out of every five people who own a cellular telephone, are now signed up for mobile Internet services, according to data just released.

The total number of mobile phone subscribers in Japan passed 70 million as of the end of August while the use of wireless Internet services grew to represent two-thirds of all users, according to the Telecommunications Carriers Association.
