Firms drum gigabit beat IT shops in Canada are showing a healthy uptake of new and improved network technologies designed for faster connectivity and increased capacity, wireless mobility and enhanced security. Network World Canada recently conducted a Hewlett-Packard ProCurve-sponsored survey of 272 Canadian CIOs, systems administrators and network managers to determine the latest trends in networking technology and IT spending.

RIM reveals work-around software for BlackBerry Research In Motion Ltd. Microsoft hopes to MIX in with Web designers With a new conference slated for March, Microsoft Corp. will attempt to woo a developer segment that’s traditionally been a hard sell: creative types who build and design multimedia Web applications. The first-ever MIX 06 conference, which will be held in Las Vegas from March 20-22, will provide a forum for showing Web designers and developers how they can use Microsoft technologies to deliver state-of-the-art business Web sites and Web-based applications.

Calgary firm hits the road with GM General Motors Corp. wants its dealers to install new Integrated Dealer Management Systems (IDMS) that would give the automaker improved insight into their spare-parts inventories, and a Canadian IT vendor is poised to grab a big piece of the pie. In an attempt to encourage dealers to make the move, GM said it would give them a choice between systems from two handpicked vendors — each of which will provide data integration with GM’s own business systems.

Intel to invest over $1 billion in India Intel Corp. announced Monday that it will invest over US$1 billion in India. The money includes $250 million it will invest in a venture capital fund, to help stimulate technological innovation in the country and drive the growth of the country's IT industry. The company is also investing $800 million over the next five years to expand its business in India, including its research and development center in Bangalore, marketing, education and community programs.
