Dialing up some bad VoIP service Earlier this year, the company I work for decided to replace our aging phone system with a VoIP solution with all the bells and whistles. We looked at several systems before finally deciding on a vendor. Our in-house IT staff was extremely competent in network administration, system administration, and so on, but none of us had any hands-on experience with phone systems, let alone VoIP phones. Fortunately, “Ring-a-Ding Telecom,” the company we hired to install and support the new system, told us not to worry. The switchover would be a snap.

Dell flicks McData switch up a notch To help its customers reduce both costs and cable sprawl, Dell Inc. has introduced a set of new connectivity features to its PowerEdge 1855 blade servers. According to Bryan Rusche, server brand manager for Dell Canada, customer demand was the main motivator behind adding the new features, which include the McData 4314 Fibre Channel switch.

Foundry adds to Ethernet wares Foundry Networks Inc. this week launched a router and switch products aimed at the core and edge of carrier metropolitan area networks. The NetIron Internet and Metro Router (IMR) 640 is targeted at the networks of service providers interested in providing MPLS VPN services over metropolitan arena networks based on Ethernet technology. Foundry also introduced its NetIron 2404, for aggregating Ethernet services and MPLS VPN traffic at the MAN edge. Foundry is also targeting the switch platforms at very large enterprises and university customers interested in building metro area backbones with carrier switching capabilities.
