Why you still need a LinkedIn account

While there are numerous sub-networks sprouting up on Facebook for professionals, and even a network of professional "pages", there are a few reasons you might still want to consider having a separate professional profile.

- It keeps your business and personal life even more separated
- There are more recruiters and job postings there
- You can give and receive recommendations
- Etc., etc.

It is interesting, however, that Facebook is making a concerted effort to gear towards front-facing careers. Seems everyone I know now that has a personality-based job (politicians, writers, on-air personalities) is getting a Facebook Page. I doubt it means they'll abandon their LinkedIn profile - since Facebook is more for 'fans' and LinkedIn for jobs - but it's still a weird development.

Foxconn ups the pay for iPad makers

After a lot of bad press about suicides and horrible working conditions, Foxconn - the company that handles Apple's production facilities in China - has raised the base level pay for junior workers from 900 yen to 1800 (2200 if they pass a technical examination).

While this may address some of the compensation concerns at the now notorious factory, it doesn't address a lot of the criticisms levied at the working conditions and hours.

The company has come under a lot of scrutiny since a rash of suicides in 2010, and were recently profiled by the New York Times and in an ABC special that aired last night.

Unfortunately, based on scenes from that special, Foxconn is not nearly the worst factory to work in - despite all the suicide reports - as garment factories in China still rank as the worst conditions for the worst pay.

Apple now ready to sue Proview over 'misleading' statements

Now, I know it looked like the whole Apple/China fiasco was ready to calm down with Apple seemingly getting its checkbook ready for a quick settlement.

Not so, it would seem, as now the Cupertino-based technology powerhouse is taking issue with statements made by Proview representatives (probably in connection with its claims that it will take a billion dollar settlement from Apple for Chinese name rights) and is possibly preparing a suit.

If you own an iPad, you're probably rich

Or at least that's the case according to statistics from an NPD report. The report found that nearly half of all iPad owners have a household income over $100,000.

Of non-iPad tablet owning households, only 26 per cent fit into that category.

But that figure is unlikely to stand the test of time, as young people (with much less wealth) are the buying tablet devices in droves, something that will shift the demographics in coming years.

It's hard to find an upside for Apple in all this, besides the crass economics win. I mean, it's likely that users will buy more expensive apps (with more profitable mark-ups) if they have more wealth. But you certainly can't spin it in a positive way from a PR angle. "iPad, the favoured device of the wealthy," just doesn't sell an advertising campaign. Particularly one from the company that still wants to be the upstart and voice of the technological revolution.

Facebook could rake in $1.2B from mobile ads

In one year that is. Or at least that's the number according to MobileSquared, a UK-based mobile research firm.

That would make Facebook one of the top ad distributors on the planet, after Google at least.

The numbers account for average monthly usage of 12 hours per user (which is high? I'm not sure about that) with Facebook serving a 25 cent CPM (Cost Per Impession) ad every 20 seconds.

Google, for reference, expects to take in $2B in advertising for fiscal 2012.
