What is Near Field Communication?

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a wireless technology that enables two devices to exchange small amounts of data when placed within a few centimetres of each other. NFC shares the same basic technology as RFID tags and contactless smartcards, but implemented in intelligent devices such as smart phones, it enables the device to be used, for example, to pay for goods in a retail store, to display information from an NFC tag in a museum or art gallery and function as an event or travel ticket.
