What is Middleware?

Middleware is a type of software that provides bridging functionality between separate applications or software processes. A common type of middleware sits between an application residing on an application server and the clients that need access to the application, providing support for different types of clients, such as PCs, smart phones or tablets. Integration middleware is used to connect existing applications with functionality from new applications.
