About Desktop Applications

Desktop applications are a class of software that run on a PC or a laptop computer providing individual workers the means to create, manage and distribute information. The term ‘desktop’ distinguishes the application from web-based applications or those residing on a corporate mainframe and accessible through ‘client’ software such as a browser. Examples of desktop applications include word processors, spreadsheets, email clients and web browsers.
