Technology News Gallery: June 18, 2012
The week's worldwide technology news in pictures. This week: Cisco's Chambers gives luck a little credit, RIM gives its former CEOs a healthy send-off, Apple gives a preview of its new OS, and more
A balancing act
At its TechEd North America conference, Microsoft had to strike a delicate balance: promoting Windows 8, its new operating system due by the end of the year, without cannibalizing sales of its existing Windows 7 OS. (IDG News Service)
Bach's (Euro)next move
Andrew Bach, who oversaw significant upgrades to network infrastructure for the global exchange company NYSE-Euronext, has joined Juniper Networks as chief architect of the networking vendor's Financial Services Team. (IDG News Service)
New Apple developments
At its Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple previewed the new iOS 6 operating system, introducing over 200 new features including an all new Maps app, new Siri features, Facebook integration, and Passbook. (IDG News Service)
Art of the turnaround
At the Cisco Live conference in San Diego, CEO John Chambers admitted Cisco owed the fact that it retained leadership in most of its categories after a tumultuous year in part to "a little luck." The company slashed 6,700 jobs and dropped several product lines. (Howard Solomon)
On-the-job learning
Not everyone at the Cisco Live conference came to learn networking at a seminar. Some, like 23-year-old Quebec student Guillaume St-Georges, came to learn by putting the wireless network together that serves the thousands of attendees. (Howard Solomon)
RIM payout
Documents revealed that former Research in Motion co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie were paid a combined $12 million in severance by the struggling BlackBerry maker. (IDG News Service)
