Undersea cable opens, linking France with Singapore

An undersea telecommunications cable, called SEA-ME-WE4, that links France with Singapore entered operation this week, according to two companies involved in the project.

An undersea telecommunications cable, called SEA-ME-WE4, that links France with Singapore entered operation this week, according to two companies involved in the project.

SEA-ME-WE4 is 20,000 kilometers long and connects Marseilles, France, to Singapore, with stops in 12 other countries: Algeria, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Italy, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates, said MCI Inc. in a statement.

SEA-ME-WE4 cable officially entered operation during a ceremony in Dubai on Tuesday, MCI said. MCI is one of 16 carriers that backed the construction of the cable. The cable has a total capacity of 1.28T bps (bits per second), according to Fujitsu Ltd., one of the two companies contracted to build the cable.
