There's been a growing trend recently to offer educational programs remotely over the Internet. Whereas in the past any kind of "free" course would have to be treated with a little suspicion, some of the newer ones are taught by world-class academics, including some at the University of Toronto.
In the IT field, it's possible to learn baisc programming, math for computer science and even artificial intelligence concepts in these free courses.
