Sun Microsystems Inc. has released an updated version of NetBeans Integrated Development Environment, adding integrated support for the company’s open source hosting site Project Kenai.
Connecting NetBeans IDE 6.7 and Kenai will allow developers to navigate between the hosting site, local code, bug reports, instant messaging conversations and wikis, Sun said. The integration will allow also developers to use the IDE to create projects in the cloud.
“The advances in the latest version of NetBeans will have a huge impact in the productivity of developers,” Jim Parkinson, vice president of Developer Products and Programs at Sun, said in a release.
But as Oracle Corp.’s acquisition of Sun looms, developers were not given any word as to the future of Sun’s NetBeans community from either company. Oracle already has its JDeveloper IDE for Java and is a supporter of the Eclipse Foundation’s IDE.
Winnipeg company receives award for medical device that helps pharmacists
A Winnipeg-based medical device company was recognized by the Massachusetts-based Computerworld Information Technology Awards Foundation for developing a self-contained unit for filling IV syringes and bags.
Intelligent Hospital Systems (IH Systems) received the 21st Century Achievement Award in June as part of the Computerworld Honors Program, which recognizes those who “use IT to benefit society.”
The Robotic IV Automation (RIVA) System is described by IH Systems as “the world’s first solution combing software, robotics and engineering to automate IV preparation in hospital pharmacies.”
"The RIVA System allows hospital pharmacies to automate the full end-to-end medication process for the first time," said Thom Doherty, CTO of IH Systems, in an issued statement.
Intelligent Community Forum opens nominations
The New York-based think tank Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) opened nominations on Monday for its 2010 Intelligent Community of the Year award.
As with previous years since 2001, the ICF invites communities of all sizes – be they from local governments, institutions, for-profit companies, national government agencies, consular offices, and individuals – to apply using the eight-question form.
It’s a 12-month process with three stages: The Smart21, Top Seven Communities, and Intelligent Community of the Year.
The nomination process will close on Sept. 21 of this year.
Starwood Hotels, Tata partner for Telepresence suites
Starwood Hotels and Resorts Inc. and Tata Communications Ltd. will roll out a series of suites for businesses to rent the use of Cisco Systems Inc. Telepresence equipment, the companies announced.
Ten new facilities are scheduled to open by the end of 2009, in Starwood properties in Toronto (the Sheraton Centre), New York, Los Angeles, Chicago. In the future, Tata and Starwood plan to open suites in Brussells, Paris, Hong Kong, Singapoer and Tokyo.
The suites join an existing stable of public Telepresence rooms in Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi and Gurgaon, India; London; and Boston.
