Service Oriented Architecture: Six steps to a successful SOA

By:  Theo Beack  On: 30 Sep 2006 For: CIO Canada Creator

Taking an organization through a service oriented architecture implementation is an evolving process which needs the right approach to succeed. These six critical steps will put you on a sound footing.

Consider this a brief introduction to some of the steps you may take to put your SOA initiative on the right track. The golden rule is to start small; remember it is not necessary to build the entire infrastructure in the first iteration of your SOA project and it is also not necessary to convert every application or business function into a service. Take incremental steps while building organizational support from within the business community as well as from within IT.

SOA ultimately is a transformational instrument for business, and organizations that embrace it well have the potential to create substantial cost savings and competitive advantage.
