Jingsu is unique in that it's a social media platform strictly for mobile devices

Rebellion Media of Waterloo, Ont. has purchased Toronto-based Jingu Apps Inc. in an all-Canadian acquisition deal.

No financial terms were disclosed.

Rebellion Media's integrated digital media platform, TRACE, powers Websites and mobile applications in the health, sports, entertainment and technology niches.

Jingu already has strong connections with the Waterloo tech scene, since it develops apps for Research in Motion's BlackBerry OS. Its Jingu social app allows BBM users create avatars, emoticons and chat with friends. In an interview posted a year ago on the BlackBerry developers' blog, founder Pankaj Gogia said the Jingu app had over 700,000 downloads in its first month and surpassed over one million soon afterward.

The company's Jingu Friends mobile social platform lets users instantly find and message other users around them. Jingu's platform is now processing over 100,000 messages per day.

“We are excited for Jingu to join Rebellion both for the team's mobile expertise as well as the million-plus and growing monthly active users on their platform,” said Ted Hastings, CEO of Rebellion Media, in a news release announcing the acquisition.
