Our week in blogs: Goodbye, Mr. Rogers

Competitors mourn the passing of Canada's ultimate entrepreneur; the most recession-proof jobs in IT; and Cisco ain't Scrooge. The best of last week's blogs on IT World Canada

In Network World Canada’s Industry Watch last week, we published a tribute to Canada’s ultimate entrepreneur, Ted Rogers, after he passed away at 75. Love him or hate him – and there are plenty of people who subscribe to each school of thought – Rogers had a huge impact on Canada’s telecommunications, sports and charitable scenes. A tough act to follow; you can read the tributes to Rogers in this posting.

Meanwhile, Cisco Systems Inc.’s move to shut down operations between Christmas and New Year’s may have drawn howls of “Scrooge!” from some, but in his VARbose blog, Computer Dealer News editor Paolo Del Nibletto defends Cisco’s cost-cutting move.

In a video interview this week, IT World Canada Editor-in-Chief Shane Schick talks with Michael Tiemann, vice-president of open source affairs and chief technology officer with Red Hat Software, who discussed trends in non-proprietary software IT managers should be following in 2009.

Career Corner tracks the most recession-proof jobs in IT. And in Ahead of the Curve, Kathleen Lau looks at Microsoft Corp.’s Model T-style Generation 4 approach to data centre design and wonders: Is it good for everybody’s business?

And in Shark Tales, our ever unmanageable Sharky combines the words “porn” and “videogame” in a headline in the ultimate search engine optimization challenge.
