Novell brains share thoughts on Microsoft

At its annual event in Salt Lake City, executives from Novell touted the 17-month-old deal with Microsoft, citing demand for Linux in the data centre. More than 60 customers have signed up with Novell and Microsoft

“When we started the work with Microsoft, we recognized that we would have some philosophical differences,” Roger Levy, senior vice-president and general manager of Open Platform Solutions at Novell, said. “But we recognized that there are customers that use both and we had the foresight to address this. Windows and Linux will be in every data centre and because we didn’t see anybody stepping up to address this, we had to do it.”

Levy said that 60 to 70 major customers have signed up jointly with Novell and Microsoft as a result of the agreement. But for the most decisive proof of the progress being made, Levy made reference the recent Windows Server 2008 launch and Microsoft’s use of the Linux platform during the event.

“Who would have thought when Steve Ballmer demonstrated Server 2008 that they would be incorporating Linux and talking about it positively,” Levy asked. “A few years ago he had some choice comments about the platform and now he’s helping to demonstrate SUSE Linux.”
