No bull from Barcelona

At a conference in Spain, an industry analyst learns about the pressures IT executives face in troubled Europe. Their responses could offer lessons on IT transformation

As many people know, much of Europe has been in financial trouble for several years and the future doesn't look much brighter.
 
Gartner's Mark McDonald found out what the IT implications are for organizations and governments when he was in Barcelona this month for one of the research firm's Symposiums and talked to IT leaders. "One cannot underestimate the economic situation in Europe," he writes, "or its impact politically, financially, socially and the degree to which they will change the nature of IT."

There are tremendous strains on CIOs, he writes, facing demands to consolidate IT systems while meeting business unit demands. The solutions, he argues, involve new ways of thinking.
