Perle adds new access feature to console servers
Perle Systems has added a new feature to its console servers. Redundant Path Technology has been added to the full product family of IOLAN Secure Console and Terminal Servers. Redundant Path Technology, unique to Perle, assures serial port access through Active Standby and Dual Network Access, offering the most reliable solution for managing data centre and remote branch equipment. Perle has also released a line of remote power switches (RPS) that enables data centre managers to remotely power on/off/cycle data centre equipment, restoring equipment functionality and decreasing downtime. RPS comes in an 8 or 16 plug model, either NEMA or IEC compatible and is available in horizontal and vertical form factor.

New Oracle suite aims at compliance
Oracle Corp.’s new Governance, Risk Management and Compliance (GRC) suite aims to help support corporate risk management and financial reporting compliance procedures. It combines business intelligence capabilities in some Oracle-developed products with the compliance management and enterprise content management tools it gained with its acquisition of Stellent Inc. last November. Oracle claims the new Oracle Fusion GRC supports both Oracle and non-Oracle business applications. It includes Oracle Fusion GRC Intelligence, which provides an out-of-the-box dashboard along with reporting capabilities, and Oracle Governance, Risk and Compliance Manager, which monitors business risks, automatically highlights potential weaknesses and initiates corrective actions. The suite also includes Application Configuration Controls, which can monitor 500 control processes in the Oracle E-Business Suite and help enforce corporate policies.

Office takes a SIP of unified messaging
Microsoft’s Office Communications Server (OCS) and Office Communicator client, the heart of its unified communications strategy, are expected to be available for public beta later this month. Microsoft has touted OCS 2007 as the platform that allows companies to integrate VoIP technology into existing telephony infrastructure. OCS, which features native support for session initiation protocol, allows users to instantly launch a phone call from Office 2007 applications, such as Word, Outlook, or OC by simply clicking on a highlighted name of another user. Microsoft is also positioning OCS 2007 alongside Exchange 2007, released late last year, as a unified messaging platform. Exchange integrates with OCS 2007 to support its built-in auto-attendant for answering and routing inbound voice calls as well as unified messaging that unifies voice mail and e-mail in a single inbox

Package offers zero-day protection
F-Secure Corp. has updated its Client Security 7 package for enhanced data protection for corporate customers. It features the F-Secure DeepGuard application, which provides zero-day protection against previously unknown malware by combining several proactive technologies such as advanced real-time heuristics, sandboxing and behaviour-monitoring with signature-based antivirus technology to ensure comprehensive data protection. The suite also comes with improved Policy Manager 7, a security management tool that provides unique remote management feature for both F-Secure Blacklight and F-Secure DeepGuard. Desktop virtualization goes mobile
VMWare ACE 2 Enterprise edition from VMWare Inc. is now available for public beta. VMWare ACE enables IT desktop managers to create a standard PC environment including operating system, data and applications, integrate IT policies to protect the contents, package it into a virtual machine and deploy it to any managed or unmanaged PC endpoint. It includes a new desktop mobility feature, Pocket ACE, which enables deployment of a full-featured desktop virtual machine to a portable media device such as a USB flash drive, portable hard drive or Apple iPod. End users can load a secure desktop onto the media device, plug it into a licensed PC or laptop and access the desktop from nearly anywhere with network connectivity.

Self-service tool checks in to clinics
Galvanon, a subsidiary of NCR Corp., has a new and more streamlined version of its patient self-service check-in solution. Dubbed CVM Lite, the device is designed exclusively for physician practices. CVM Lite features pre-built templates for managing patient information, appointments and other workflow, as a cost-effective self-service solution for clinics of all sizes. It enables patients to check in for appointments, enter or verify demographic and insurance information, and sign consent forms electronically. Galvanon says the self-service solution helps eliminate redundant paperwork associated with patient registration, as well as reduce patient wait times.

Nevis triples LAN capacity
Nevis Networks has updated its LANsecure operating software OS 3.0 for its LANenforcer appliances. The new features include accelerated endpoint posture checks coupled with identity-based access control that avoids disruption to network performance or end users, a three-fold increase in user capacity on the appliances that cuts per-user security costs, and integration with existing identity management systems to enforce pre-defined, user-based application access policies for simpler administration. The new system means LANenforcers can be positioned anywhere in the network and will be able to support up to 3,000 concurrent users accessing an organization’s LAN, tripling the previous maximum.

Tablet PC gets water treatment Emano Tec’s new tablet computer has a light appeal for healthcare workers. Weighing only 12 ounces, the MedTab tablet PC measures 5.5 inches by 7.5 inches by half an inch, and can easily fit into a lab coat pocket. This compact-sized PC is also “washable” for easier disinfection, Emano Tec said. It has a high-resolution touch-screen and supports handwriting and voice input. MedTab is powered by an Intel 624-MHz processor with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capability, and runs on a modified version of WinCE operating system. Designed to address the security of electronic health records, MedTab also includes protection features from Cisco.
