Macs to wave stars and stripes

Apple CEO Tim Cook says the company will spend US$100 million to bring some Macintosh manufacturing to the U.S. A columnist looks at what it means

The IT world’s buzzing with news that Apple Inc., an icon of American creativity, is going to bring manufacturing of some of its Macintosh computers from China to the U.S.

But beyond headlines and flag waving, what does it mean?

Mike Cassidy of SiliconValley.com puts the announcement in perspective. It’s not merely about the fact that wages in China are rising. Nor is it a publicity stunt.
 
Keep in mind that Macs aren’t Apple’s main revenue-earner. Also, most of the parts will be bought from suppliers outside the U.S.

Still, it makes one wonder whether Canadian electronics manufacturer Celestica is considering boosting its assembly lines here.
