Isilon upgrade to support big data, mobility

LAS VEGAS – EMC Corp. is working on a new release of its scale-out network attached storage product Isilon OneFS, which will have data deduplication capabilities, new security features and improvements for object-oriented storage, Hadoop HDFS 2.O and Syncplicity file sharing.

The upcoming Isilon OneFS 7.0 will enable enterprise organizations meet growing big data needs and manage mobile workflows and applications, Bill Richter, president of the Isilon storage division of EMC, said at this week’s EMC World conference.

“The enterprise landscape is rapidly transforming as traditional IT requirements for data protection, security and performance combine with the challenges of managing larger file-based and unstructured big data environments,” said Richter. “Isilon will now more secure with the addition of compliance and security features sought by enterprise companies increasingly under pressured by industry regulations.”

He said the next release of Isilon will integrate with the EMC Common Event Enabler which will provide the system with an auditing application that monitors all file access and facilitates report creation as well as custody tracking. This capability is important for companies such as financial institutions and health care organizations subject to industry and government regulations.

Isilon OneFS 7.0 will also enable IT administrators to configure a simple “set-and-forget” block level deduplication policy which ranges from individual directories up to complete storage pools, said Richter

“By providing an automated way to drive storage efficiency across data sets, organizations can further reduce operating costs,” he said.

The Isilon enhancements address the typical needs of large companies dealing with big data compliance and management issues, according to Terri McClure, senior analyst for enterprise at Strategy Group.

“Isilon OneFS 7.0 is well aligned to help customers meet the new challenges facing enterprise IT environments today,” he said. “Organizations are increasingly under pressure to drive mobility, analytics and cloud initiatives in a way that is not only secure, but efficient as well.”

He said customers will welcome Isilon’s new deduplication and audit features.

Other enhancements to Isilon are:

  • Integration with the new EMC ViPR software defined storage product, which will extend Isilon’s scalability and open up integration for object storage APIs from Amazon S3, EMC Atos and others
  • OneFS will accommodate object storage through an interface REST (Representational State Transfer) to Namespace. This will enable access to data and automation and management of Isilon storage
  • OneFS will also support OpenStack Swift and Cinder integration for customers deploying the OpenStack ecosystems.

Isilon’s integration with Syncplicity online file sharing, offers a flexible cloud-based solution with the visibility required by IT managers for controlling data and storage resources said Richter.

OneFS 7.0 will be rolled out later this year.
