Symantec Corp. has released a list of the 100 dirtiest sites on the Web.
The company isn’t talking about pornography, necessarily, though 48 per cent of the sites do feature adult content. Symantec is referring to the number of threats detected on the sites by its Norton Safe Web service in August.
Threats could include viruses and other malware, browser exploits, security risks and links to unsafe sites. According to Symantec, the average number of threats per malicious site is 23. The Top 40 on the dirtiest Web site list have more than 20,000 threats per site.
Of sites on the list, 75 had been distributing malware for more than six months.
While porn sites dominate the list, Symantec said it also includes sites devoted to a variety of subjects, including hunting, catering and figure skating.
Many have innocuous URLs: 17ebook.com, bpwhamburgorchardpark, gardensrestaurantandcatering.com, kingfamilyphotoalbum.com, and texaswhitetailfever.com, to name a few.
And the BOBI goes to …
A group of self-described Canadian business intelligence leaders has formed the Best of BI Group, dedicated to “recognizing outstanding achievements in the field of business intelligence,” according to a press release from the organization.
The group plans to annually present BOBI awards to recognize people and companies that have contributed to advancing BI in Canada.
BI professionals can nominate projects, tools, people and companies for BOBI awards. Submissions will be voted on by Best of BI Group members and announced at an awards dinner.
Vancouver ISP boosts Internet speed
Novus Entertainment Inc., a Vancouver Internet service provider, has boosted its base Internet speeds by 10 Mbps on all business and consumer packages.
Base download speeds now range from 20 to 60 Mbps, according to a press release.
Novus said its high-end package, Novus Net 60, offers 60 Mbps download, 10 Mbps upload and a 360 GB data transfer limit.
