While Windows Vista SP1 won’t be broadly available until later this month, bloggers are debating the news that it will cause certain programs — such as Zone Alarm Security Suite, Trend Micro Internet Security and BitDefender 10 — to either stop working, or suffer reduced functionality.
The remedy, says Microsoft, is for users to keep up with third-party upgrades.
“I ranted once about Vista, and at the time, my biggest beef was the software incompatibilities,” Anthony Richard Hung said at Deep Jive Interests. “It looks like, with this major update, even more of these problems are likely.”
“Most of the software hit by the upgrade are security programs that prevent Windows users falling prey to viruses, trojans and booby-trapped Web pages,” Cornell Finch added. “Yet another reason not to use Vista!”
Blogger Rod Templeton defended the upgrades. “Before you go jumping on Microsoft, please realize that they don’t write the apps that no longer work...the companies that developed these apps should have confirmed that they worked under SP1 themselves,” he said. “But then, it’s Microsoft’s fault that HP didn’t write new drivers for your printer when you upgraded to Vista, too, isn’t it? ”
