Motorola Inc. has started its own interoperability testing lab
(IOT) for the Wireless Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX)
standard.
The Schaumberg, Ill.-based wireless behemoth is offering
interoperability testing both at Arlington Heights, Ill. and at a new
lab in Taiwan.
If you’re a vendor and want Motorola to test your wireless product,
you must “provide assurances” to Motorola that it is certified by the
WiMAX Forum.
WiMAX is based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers 802.16 standards. Unlike the Wi-Fi standard, which has a
range of 100 metres, WiMAX can provide coverage, without requiring line
of sight, at distances of up to 5 km.
While the IEEE defines the 802.16 standards, the WiMAX Forum certifies products and defines system profiles.
Motorola says its IOT program is intended to “validate” that
customers equipment is compatible with their network infrastructure.
