Primus Telecommunications Canada Inc. announced Wednesday it will increase its wireless coverage area starting next spring.
The
subsidiary of McLean, Va.-based Primus Telecommunications Group Inc.
does not own wireless spectrum but is a mobile virtual network operator
(MVNO) using the Rogers network. It has signed a new contract with
Rogers that will let it offer service over 94 per cent of Canada,
providing voice, text and wireless data packages.
Primus owns 20
per cent of Globility, which in turn owns wireless vendor Mipps Inc.,
which entered Industry Canada’s Advanced
Wireless Services spectrum auction in 2008. Mipps later
withdrew its bid.
Mipps owns WiMAX
spectrum and, along with Primus, has
been testing the service in Toronto and Hamilton for two
years. It does not offer WiMAX service to the general public yet.
Primus
originally inked its MVNO
deal with Rogers in 2004.
