NetQin Mobile Inc. of Beijing has announced software designed to protect mobile phones with Google Inc.'s Android operating system from viruses and spyware.

The vendor warned of spyware disguised as a tip calculator utility for mobile devices, which is actually designed to send all incoming and outgoing text messages to a third party e-mail address.

RIM provides free BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express

Research in Motion Inc. is providing a no-frills version of its BlackBerry Enterprise Server software, which manages networks using BlackBerry smart phones, free of charge.

Users can download BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express from RIM’s Web site.

It works with both Microsoft Exchange 2003, 2007 and 2010, plus Windows Small Business Server 2003 and 2008.

With BES Express, RIM says companies can synchronize users’ e-mail, calendar, contact databases, notes and task. They can also manage their e-mail folders and search their mail from their BlackBerries.

It is certified for VMware Inc.’s ESX virtualization software and includes more than 35 IT controls and policies.

Symantec offers free trial version of backup software

Symantec Corp. has released version 2010 of its Backup Exec software for medium-sized businesses.

A trial version can be downloaded from Symantec’s Web site. Symantec does not support trial users.

A supported version costs $1,174 for a media server licence and basic maintenance.

Symantec recently held a conference in Toronto on both Backup Exec 2010 and NetBackup 7for customers and resellers.

The Cupertino, Calif. software maker said it has improved the de-duplication capabilities of both software packages so companies can backup data without clogging the network.

Backup Exec 2010 has a granular recovery feature that lets administrators get individual e-mails, inboxes or files from a single system backup in a virtual environment.

NetFlow Analyzer supports Cisco-based quality of service

ManageEngine of Austin, Tex.Is shipping version 7 of its NetFlow Analyzer Enterprise edition software.

The vendor says version 7 reports on Cisco Systems Inc.’s class-based quality of service (CBQoS). The software collects data formatted with the IP Flow Information Export (IPFIX) protocol and will generate alarms when the volume of network traffic exceeds a threshold defined by an administrator.

Administrators can create Web-based management dashboards and design reports to monitor only the hosts, devices, segments and applications they want.

Users who want to buy the software after a 30-day trial will have to pay at least $10,000 for a licence.

Virtual machine backup software unveiled

A Mount Arlington, N.J.- based virtual backup appliance maker has announced recovery software for virtual machines.

PHD Virtual Technologies’ express version 4.0 supports VMware Inc.’s vSphere 4 and ESX 3.x. The vendor says its software shortens the backup window by reading only blocks that have changed, rather than scanning an entire disk.

Version 4 also lets administrators restore virtual machines from with the configuration and development virtual appliance user interface.

ClearApps ships Network Inventory Advisor 3.6

ClearApps LLC has released version 3.6 of its Network Inventory Advisor software, which is designed to scan nodes from a PC.

It can scan hardware using a remote agent utility, and it also performs agentless scans.

New to version 3.6 is a batch management feature that lets network administrators select two or more nodes in a tree and change their details. Administrators can also be notified of hardware additions, removals or changes, plus they can detect plug-and-play IDs.

The software can be installed on Windows PCs and can can other nodes, including those running Macintosh and Linux, through SNMP.

Open Text rolls out unified messaging for the iPhone

Open Text Corp. of Waterloo is offering collaboration software for Apple’s iPhone and iTouch devices.

FirstClass Mobile lets mobile Apple users log on to their FirstClass server to access data from their FirstClass desktop. FirstClass combines messaging and communications, including e-mail and voicemail.

The mobile version gives iPhone and iTouch users access to e-mail, bookmarks and content from their “shared collaborative spaces.” It also lets road warriors share sound files, videos and play their voicemail messages in MP3 format on their iPhones and iTouches.

The software is available free of charge to FirstClass users for download at the App Store site.

Modus spam filter includes foreign language support

Vircom Inc., a Montreal-based anti-spam vendor, has released its Modus 4.7 e-mail security software.

It includes integration with PGP Corp.’s Universal Gateway and includes white lists, which the vendor claims will send replies to users’ inboxes without delay.

Also new to version 4.7 is bounced address tag validation, which lets administrators determine which bounces are legitimate, and if not, how they are handled. The intent is to prevent infinite spam loops.

The sieve scripting engine is designed to handle spam in foreign languages by recognizing UTF-8 characters.

LANState tells you when clients install new software

10-Strike Software of Ulyanovsk, Russia has announced version 4.4 of its LANState Pro network monitoring and management software.

LANState Pro is designed to discover network devices such as routers, servers and printers, and produce a map. It alerts administrators when hosts or services go down.

Version 4.4 lets administrators monitor lists of installed applications on remote machines and notifies them when new software is installed. Another new feature lets users run external JavaScript and VisualBasic scripts to re-start services, devices or databases that have stopped.

Lansweeper includes 80 reports

Hemoco bvba of Hamme, Belgium has announced Lansweeper version 3.5.1, which is designed to provide inventories of Windows networks without requiring administrators to install software agents on each machine.

The software is designed to get data on each user that logs on to a machine. The vendor says it also reports defined Windows groups and system information on each machine, including controllers, peripherals and memory.

Lansweeper looks for Active Directory objects, processes that are currently running and Internet Explorer details, such as which ActiveX controls have been downloaded.

In includes 80 reports and users can create their own reports, such as lists of executables and dynamic link libraries on target machines.

BitDefender claims it can remove Conficker

BitDefender LLC of Bucharest, Romania announced software designed to counter the latest version of Conficker worm, also known as Downadup.

A beta version of Downadup Removal tool can be downloaded from this Web site.

The most recent version, dubbed Win32.Worm.Downadup.C, is spread using a vulnerability in Windows RPC Server and described in Microsoft Corp.’s security bulletin MS08-067.
