Demystifying This Latest ERP Buzzword

Is MDM the New CRM?

The answer is: MDM is a gateway drug to CRM and ERP.

MDM is not new. Reference tables in well architected systems were standardized long before CRM and MDM was a twinkle in software vendor’s eyes. Centralized systems of the past had only one set of tables, what happened was that distributed computing created silos of data and now we have come full cycle to centralize data once again. CRM attempted to centralize customer data and its management. ERP centralized data and applications. But vendors had difficulty selling CRM and ERP to some segment of the market since customers had numerous legacy systems they didn’t want to replace. So, the vendors offered the “next best thing”, MDM. Centralized data management or a.k.a. “enterprise data management”. The problem is that MDM requires cooperation across the enterprise which in many organizations is difficult to achieve and it requires that legacy systems be modified to accommodate the MDM standards which is expensive and time consuming. Many organizations discovered these requirements only after they began their journey down the MDM road. Once that is revealed, they are told to deploy data governance as a solution. But data governance requires centralized a.k.a. “enterprise” data management practices be deployed. So these organizations end up in a catch 22. What came first MDM or data governance?

Then comes the real challenge. What are candidates for master data? The recommendations are customer, product and vendor. But then the fun begins. First the need to define “customer”. Defining customer from a department perspective is interesting. Sales may define a prospect as a customer but finance does not recognize them as a customer. Next comes the decisions as to what attributes are master data attributes? Customer name, address, relationship’s etc? Then what are the meanings of these terms in each of the systems, in other words the semantics and value domains?

These issues are the primary reasons why MDM is typically only deployed to serve one application such as a data warehouse. Reaching consensus on data across the enterprise and across all the legacy systems is a difficult task which may lead some organizations to decide perhaps they need a CRM or ERP system! Of course many of the same vendors who offer MDM solutions also sell CRM and ERP solutions. So MDM is like a gateway drug to CRM and ERP!

This is an amazing piece of compute machinery, that is so under utilized as just a games machine. The browser on the PS3 is poor, and it could be an amazing educational tool if it had Google Earth running on it. The good news would be that this forces a major infrastructure upgrade, which could be good for jobs in the ICT job market.
