One common complaint with many leading anti-virus programs is that they often significantly slow down your computer.
It seems security products' vendor Symantec has taken seriously some of the user feedback they've received about their products in this regard.
The company assures us that “improved performance” is the hallmark of Norton Internet Security 2008 - the latest iteration of one of its flagship products, that was launched yesterday.
Compared to Norton Internet Security 2007, the 2008 user interface (UI) “responds 22 per cent faster, and completes a quick scan up to 39 per cent faster,” says the Symantec release.
Sounds good - in theory.
But the extent to which these capabilities -- faster UI response and quicker scans -- actually enhance the user experience still remains to be seen. (When I check out the product, I’ll let you know).
Anyway, other new bells and whistles included with Norton Internet Security 2008 include:
Browser Defender — That protects against “drive-by downloads” and other threats that exploit Internet Explorer vulnerabilities
One-Click Support — Symantec says this is a “new approach to support” that offers automatic troubleshooting of common issues such as connectivity, licensing, and product activation, while also providing direct access to tech support via telephone, free e-mail or free live chat
Home Network Feature — Within Norton Internet Security 2008, this feature checks the security of your wireless network
