This is very helpful. I am not currently a Fido user. I have Rogers for internet, cable and pay as you go blackberry phone.

I am buying the Iphone 3G S for my daughter and I want to go through Fido not Rogers.

What are my options. The idea of a 3 year Fido plan is scary - the technologies changes so quickly and the providers charge a fortune to upgrade if they do the upgrades - look at what is happening with Rogers and the older Iphone?

Let me know if you have some other ideas.

They have contract with AT&T. They can even make a case for voiding warranty.

They do not have right to render phone useless or even to make it so that third party applications cannot be installed or run on the phone.

All the hype to drive up demand so that people would pay $600 was ridiculous. Slashing the price by 33% after only two months was worse. Rendering phones useless worst of all.

If you consider that they are doing this to their most avid fans it does make you wonder why you would want to be one of their customers!

re: Two lines, one phone, and too much in LD charges

Michelle:

I don't know of any consumer advocate groups specifically targeting cell phones, but the Public Interest Advocacy Centre in Ottawa deals with the CRTC over regulations. One opportunity to address the competitiveness of the Canadian cellular market has passed -- we're past the deadline for submissions to Industry Canada regarding the upcoming Advanced Wireless Spectrum auction. One of the issues at hand is whether to set aside some of the spectrum for new entrants into wireless (i.e. not Bell, Telus or Rogers) to increase competitiveness. Not surprisingly, Bell, Telus and Rogers are opposed. The majority of submissions were in favour. There would be more competitive pressure on the Big 3 if an MTS Allstream or Videotron were playing, too.

I'll drop an analyst colleague of mine a note and ask him for his two cents on the subject (though it's usually more than two cents).
