This week’s news that didn’t fit to print from HP, NetSuite and BitDefender

*Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) has announced the expansion of the ColorLok paper standard with new benefits for commodity-grade office papers for laser printing. A study conducted by Buyers Laboratory Inc. and commissioned by HP concludes that ColorLok quality standard papers can help maximize the life of laser printers – running up to nine times longer – compared to tested papers that do not meet the standard. ColorLok papers helped protect critical laser engine parts and kept them clean on the inside, enabling the consistent, reliable performance and quality customers expect. The large-particle mineral filler papers included in the BLI analysis that do not meet the ColorLok quality standard are manufactured in Asia and distributed primarily in China and India.

*BitDefender, an internet security software vendor, is warning social networking devotees to be careful when accepting friend requests and to be conscious of the data they share. According to a new study conducted by BitDefender over a two week period, social network users do not appear to be preoccupied with the real identity of the people they meet online or about the details they disclose while chatting with total strangers. The study revealed that 94 per cent of those asked to “friend” the test profile, an unknown, attractive young woman, accepted the request without knowing who the requester really was. The study sample group included 2,000 users from all over the world registered on one of the most popular social networks. In the first step, the users were only requested to add the unknown test profile as their friend, while in the second step several conversations with randomly selected users aimed to determine what kind of details they would disclose. The study showed more than 86 per cent of the users who accepted the test-profile’s friend request work in the IT industry, of which 31 per cent work in IT security. The most frequent reason for accepting the test profile’s friend request was her “lovely face” (53 per cent). After a half an hour conversation, 10 per cent disclosed personal sensitive information, such as: address, phone number, mother’s and father’s name, etc. – information usually requested as answers to password recovery questions. Two hours later, 73 per cent siphoned what appears to be confidential information from their workplace, such as future strategies, plans, as well as unreleased technologies/software.

*IBM (NYSE: IBM) is producing what it claims is the world's fastest computer chip which will power a new version of the IBM mainframe that begins shipping to customers on Sept. 10. IBM said the speed is necessary for businesses managing huge workloads, such as banks and retailers, especially as the world becomes increasingly more inter-connected, data has grown beyond the world's storage capacity, and business transactions continue to skyrocket. The z196 processor is a four-core chip that contains 1.4 billion transistors on a 512-square millimeter surface. The chip was designed by IBM engineers in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and was manufactured using IBM's 45 nanometer SOI processor technology in the company's 300mm fab in East Fishkill, N.Y. The mainframe processor makes use of IBM's embedded DRAM technology, which allows IBM to place dense DRAM caches, or components, on the same chips as high-speed microprocessors, resulting in improved performance. The chip will power the new zEnterprise System. The core server in the zEnterprise System -- called zEnterprise 196 -- contains 96 microprocessors, capable of executing more than 50 billion instructions per second.
