Disney World connection corrections


I received a note today from Craig Cudmore about my blog "Disney World clouds my access". In his note, Mr. Cudmore, a big Disney fan and an IT pro,brought up what he believes are some factual errors in my blog.

Here is Mr. Cudmore's issues:

1. The app that's available for Disney wait times is only available on Verizon phones. There is no iPhone app for use in the parks.

2. There is WiFi access available in the business centres of most of the Disney hotels.

3. There is great 3G wireless access available throughout the parks and resorts on AT&T. This works for all phones, not just iPhones.

4.Walt Disney himself dictated that there were to be no outside newspapers and magazines available in the parks so people could truely enjoy being away from work.

Let me address issue No. 1 by saying Mr. Cudmore is absolutely correct. The Disney appfor wait times is on Verizon. Thanks for bring that to my attention; I do recall that now. But the iPhone does have a free Disney app and while it has a GPS serviceI do not think it provides wait times for rides and other attractions. The iPhone Disney app is available on iTunes and it has this description: "The Disney App is everything you love and expect from Disney in one FREE custom application. At the touch of a finger -- find all your favorite Disney characters, play custom games, watch video, and listen to music. You can also get the latest news on all things Disney, buy movie tickets, and customize the App with exclusive character themes."

Issue No. 2: the hotel I stayed at did not have a business centre and catered mostly to kids.

Issue No. 3: I am not disputing the 3G service at the Disney parks. I know it's there. Me and my wife decided to carry one phone and it was her's. I was saddled with the digital camera and the video camera. We tried the best we could to bring as little as possible to the parks. The pointI wanted to make was that when I had some down time I was unable to connect to the outside world.

Issue No. 4. I read on theDisney World wikipedia page that Walt Disney wanted a greater buffer from reality at Disney World. The wikipedia page said that Walt Disney found out that a family left DisneyLand in Anaheim, Calif. early when they saw the highway congested while on a ride. I applaud Walt Disney and the Disney World staff for providing this kind of a break from reality. As I said I took my family on vacation and while I wouldn't say it was a relaxing time off the Disney World parks were a lot of fun and provided great excitement to my two daughters.

I hope I addressed all four issues. I sincerely appreciate your comments. I too am a Disney fan. My first Disney experience was in Paris and a few years ago I got an opportunity to visit the original DisneyLand in California. This was my first time to the Magic Kingdom in Florida. I never got to go as kid, but I am grateful that my wife and I were able to provide this great experience for our kids.

I am a news junkie and we now live in a world where the lines are blurred between work time and leisure time. This is my daily reality, but I did appreciate the time away from my computer. Thanks Craig.

Hello Paolo, I echo Craig Cudmore's comments -especially on #4. Now how about those attractions that land you in a gift shop when you exit the ride?

Now, I'd really like to hear your comments on the Ontario Parks recent announcement to provide WiFi access in their parks. I'm a tech guy, but geez, camping with computers? Are there no places left on earth where people can just relax without being constantly joined at the hip with their electronic devices? I find it very ironic with all of the 'demands' for wireless access service, yet have you tried to find a pubic drinking fountain lately? It would seem that priorities have shifted from a truly basic need such as drinking water, and public WiFi access.

Thanks for your comment. No I am not a tommy texter and yes I did notice that after every ride we walked into a gift shop, which was aggrevating to say the least.

Have you noticed that when you do find a water fountain it is either broken or just spits out drips of water.
