This week’s news that didn’t quite fit to print: Primus Canada, Peer 1 and BitDefender


*Vancouver-based Peer 1 Hosting has formed a relationship with Microsoft Corp. to offer customers fully featured, enterprise-level email services. In addition to the Peer 1 hosting services, this will deliver a cost-effective, immediate and hassle-free way of managing SMB customer mail environments. Peer 1 said its hosted Microsoft Exchange solution is scalable, secure and full-featured, giving users the ability to easily collaborate without them having to invest in mail servers, software licenses, security, or be involved with ongoing system administration. Users can share and access calendars, tasks, contacts, public folders, groups and global address books as well as synchronize from their desktop, mobile device, and the Web. The packages start from US$10 per mailbox per month. It will be deployed through a web-based automation platform to make managing the mail accounts easier, with customers being able to administer users and feature benefits.

*Primus Canada has added a full suite of Polycom Hosted PBX phones to its commercial product lineup. Now available across Canada, these new phones offer Polycom HD Voice capabilities to Primus clients. “We’re thrilled to be able to provide Primus customers with even more choice,” says Jeff Lorenz, VP sales & marketing, Primus Canada. “Today’s announcement underscores our commitment to providing not only the most advanced products and technology, but a full suite of end-to-end services that today’s businesses come to expect.” Primus offers a full and comprehensive portfolio of phones and businesses have the choice of six distinct phone products tailored for various business needs. Each phone in the new lineup boasts premium clarity using Polycom’s HD Voice and innovative features. Primus Hosted PBX eliminates the cost of owning and servicing an expensive PBX system, and offers 24/7 support so clients can focus on core-business functions.

*Security software vendor BitDefender wants to give you an Apple iPad. Well, one of you at least. They’ve launched a new online game called “What’s in Nelson’s Dojo” they say is inspired by TV’s The Office. You just have to watch a series of three videos clips that last up to three minutes each, and pay attention. The videos are comedic tales of workplace buffoonery at a small business. Prizes include an iPad, BitDefender Internet Security 2011 or one-year licenses for BitDefender Client Security and BitDefender Security for File Servers to cover 25 computers for businesses. *Xerox Canada has launched the Xerox WorkCentre 3550 desktop black-and-white laser multi-function printer (MFP), the newest addition to Xerox’s family of office products. This MFP copies, scans, faxes and prints up to 35 pages per minute for busy offices. Designed for SMBs, it includes features such as automatic duplex printing and the CentreWare Internet Services device management tool. It has a standard paper capacity of 550 sheets, the secure print feature keeps documents from printing until users provide a PIN code to release the job, color scanning, a USB port for file transfer, scanning and faxing features such as network scan to PC, scan-to-email and fax-forward-to-fax/email, and Optical Character Recognition software quickly and easily turns user’s hard copies into editable, more manageable electronic documents. The WorkCentre 3550 starts at $1,199 and is available immediately worldwide through Xerox direct sales, agents, resellers, dealers and concessionaires.

*Ottawa’s Protecode Inc., a solution provider for managing open source software licenses, has announced Protecode System 4, an update to its suite of capabilities that enable businesses to efficiently and cost-effectively identify open source content in their source code and determine their licensing obligations. System 4 installs as a simple overlay on existing design, development and testing environments without changing any existing workflows. The core of System 4 is the Protecode open source reference database that matches source code against a comprehensive list of 450,000 open source software projects. System 4 delivers improvements in three key areas: scalability, a new user interface and improved data relevance. Enterprise users can now instantiate multiple virtual instances of Protecode System 4 enabling different groups within an organization to set up their own open source management systems with specific roles and intellectual property policies. Protecode System 4 is available now.

*McAfee Inc. has unveiled its Risk Management solution for IT Security, combining real-time threat intelligence with global vulnerability scanning across applications, databases and networks, and correlates that with security countermeasures already in place, to help organizations assess their highest priority risks. Consisting of three underlying offerings -- McAfee Risk Advisor 2.5, McAfee Vulnerability Manager 7.0 and McAfee Vulnerability Manager for Databases – the solution automatically pulls information together into a real-time risk analytics engine. This enables organizations to fully understand their risk posture across every meaningful sector of their IT environment including databases, web applications, systems and networks to know precisely what is needed to optimize their security posture.
