Sun revs up Sun Fire

Sun Microsystems Inc. on Tuesday announced its push further into the UNIX server market with the addition of its fastest processor to its line of Sun Fire servers.

While the technology is already available in some workstations, the Sun Fire 3800, 4800, 6800, 12K and 15K servers will all integrate the 1.05GHz UltraSPARC III processor.

New capabilities achieved through the company’s Uniboard CPU/Memory board technology available throughout the firm’s Sun Fire line of servers include the ability for users to allocate resources where they are needed, the company said in a statement. Users could upgrade their existing 900MHz chips to the 1.05GHz offering without having to reboot their servers.

Pricing for an entry-level Sun Fire 3800 with 4 CPUs (and the 1.05GHz processor) starts at $318,400, according to a Sun Canada spokesperson. For more information on the release, the company can be found at http://www.sun.com.
