Sun and Fujitsu announce new SPARC servers

Sun and Fujitsu announced this week an enhanced line of SPARC enterprise servers that will offer enterprise-level virtualization and consolidation capabilities, and boasts an 80 per cent performance boost from commercial applications.

The M4000, the M5000, the M8000, and the M9000 are billed as offering up to two times’ better performance on high-performance workloads, and also use almost half as much energy per core. They are available now from the two vendors and their resellers.

The servers are based on the quad-core SPARC64 VII processor—which is also available as an upgrade option for existing SPARC Enterprise servers—and use Solaris.
