Quad-core Atom chip for tablets set for release

Intel Corp. is expected to release sometime this year it a quad-core processor for tablets which is reported to pack twice the power of the company’s Clover Trail processor.

The new Atom chip, code-named Bay Trail, will likely be available in devices in time for this year’s holiday season, Intel announced during the Monday opening of the International Consumer Electronics Show on Monday.

ARM-based chips from Samsung, Nvidia, Apple and Qualcomm currently swamped the market but Intel hopes Bay Trail which is can be installed in devices as thin as 8mm will help the company breakthrough.
