Polish e-mail war to continue

Poland’s second biggest web portal — Wirtualna Polska SA (Virtual Poland, WP) — announced that it is upgrading its paid e-mail service. Users are offered 150MB and 250MB mail boxes for the same price as previously for 50MB and 75MB.

Wirtualna Polska is the forth Polish Internet company that joined a battle of e-mail capacity started by Google Inc. nearly four months ago. Certainly, WP will not be the last company to follow that track.

Polish e-mail wars began no sooner than two weeks ago with Interia.pl launching free 100MB mail boxes (corresponding to Yahoo Inc.’s latest offer). On the same day O2.pl Sp introduced 25MB free mail storage. Wirtualna Polska boosted paid e-mail service enabling users to store up to 150MB of letters (PocztaPro) and 250MB (PocztaBiz). Soon mail boxes of over 100MB of capacity will become a standard in Polish internet.

“I was delighted to see my e-mail box storage extended a coupe of times,” said a Polish user on an Internet forum “Now I’m able to exchange favorite mp3s with my friends via internet mail service. There’s nothing better like an e-mail with a song from a best friend.”

But increased mail capacity is not everything. As nothing can stop the surge of spam, antispam tools available in e-mail offers are crucial for Internet users. Wirtualna Polska improved its antispam system providing users with two level antispam protection.

WP users are also able to participate in free internet language courses provided by the company.

Wirtualna Polska, first Polish web portal has over 2.3 million active mail boxes. Onet.pl SA — the biggest internet company on Polish market so far has gained 2.1 – 2.2 active mail boxes. Onet is about to increase capacity of its free mail box service but did not want to reveal any details.
