Linux PengPod tablets, mini PC now shipping

In recent years there’s been a rise in the number of PC’s coming into the market preloaded with the Linux operating system and a recent forecast from Forrester Research Inc. predicts expenditure for Linux-based computers will go up by as much as 44 per cent.

However, until last year’s announcement of the PengPod exceeding its funding goal for $49,000, there has been little new on the Linux tablet front.

Yesterday, a post on the official PengPod blog site reported that pre-orders of two versions of the so-called “true Linux” tablets have begun shipping this month with new orders expected to be rolled out in late February.

The seven and 10-inch tablet models come with the Allwinner A10 system on a chip.

The seven-inch PengPod700 tablet sells for $110. It has a capacitive touch screen 1GB RAM, 8GB flash, speakers and a front facing camera.

The 10-inch model has a price tag of $175 and has a higher resolution display.
