Ericsson and Cingular bring 3G home

Ericsson has announced it will supply the core network infrastructure and overlay radio network equipment for Cingular Wireless LLC’s GSM build-out.

Cingular announced plans to replace its time-division multiple access wireless infrastructure with GSM just over a month ago. Other suppliers for the GSM build-out include Nokia Corp. and Siemens AG.

Ericsson’s core and overlay radio equipment complies with GSM-based Packet Radio Service and Enhanced Data-rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) specifications for 3G wireless services, the company says. The EDGE infrastructure will allow Cingular to support increased capacity for voice and 3G high-speed data services, Ericsson says.
