Delano tweaks business suite for speed

A Toronto-based e-business software company says it has “tweaked” one of its flagship products so that it functions up to 500 per cent better.

Toronto-based Delano Technology Corp. has released version 3.1 of its e-Business Interaction Suite, saying that the upgrade packs all the punch of the original platform, with fives times the performance.

Sean Maurik, chief software architect at Delano, said one of the main focuses of the new release was improving on the scalability and performance numbers.

“Also, we have enhanced our database capability, and where all of our previous releases have let you do things with databases, we have expanded that to let you create and model some of the database set-up ahead of time in what we call global database connections,” Maurik said. “Lower level details that some people don’t need, but when you get into these large level systems, being able to tweak every little detail helps.”

The e-Business Interaction Suite is a software platform for developing and deploying e-business applications. The e-Business Interaction Suite supports open-standards and component-based architecture, which Maurik said provides better flexibility for customization and integration. The e-Business Interaction Suite extends existing technology investments at companies including databases, directories, e-mail and Web servers, and enterprise applications.

“Some of the other things we did include revamping the server to better support high volumes of inbound traffic,” Maurik added.

Rene de Vries, CTO of Knowledge Exchange in Nieuwgein, Netherlands, said his company just installed the new version a week ago and so far, he has no complaints.

“We have been using it (the old version) for the past two years,” he said, describing his company as a knowledge distributor/enricher. “The speed improvements (in the new version) that were promised have turned out to be true. We use Delano heavily to send out personalized e-mail because the newsletters we send out are made with custom-content and we send out thousands of them a day, so every little bit helps.”

Delano benchmarks show performance enhancements including up to 500 per cent improvement in speed of some remote database transactions, up to 40 per cent increase in e-mail throughput and up to 300 per cent improvement in the speed of dynamic personalization of e-mail content.

“That’s sort of what the main focus was with this release, it’s all under the covers,” Maurik said. “It just makes things closer to what you want to happen. Your IT team doesn’t have to know the lowest level tricks for handling mail service and such. We have tweaked and fine tuned every little step.”

The e-Business Interaction Suite version 3.1 is priced at approximately US$300,000, but is typically bundled and sold with Delano’s marketing applications. The product is shipping now. The company is on the Web at www.delanotech.com.
