Darwin Dimensions has announced a series of products that automate the creation of 3D character models. The evolver family of software creates unique 3D character models for games, film, TV, multimedia, and a variety of other uses, according to the company.

The software allows users to combine and mix physical attributes from a “virtual gene pool” of pre-built characters that are accessible through the evolver Ancestor Library. Users can tweak, morph and customize facial features and body types via a graphical interface.

Character models are available in several resolutions, and are rigged for animation and ready for integration into FBX-compatible 3D animation workflows.

The software outputs humanoids only. The final version ships with 66 facial expressions, including 12 phonemes for realistic emotional and lip-syncing animation, color bump and specular map textures with a UV unfold, and balanced geometry for movement that is anatomically and kinetically accurate, according to Darwin Dimensions. evolver models are unclothed and hairless, ready to be customized by a 3D artist.

The family of products consists of evolver BASIC, evolver PRO, and evolver COMPLETE.

Evolver BASIC includes evolver Character Builder, a stand-alone software tool that allows users to create proxy characters on their PCs. Production-ready versions of the users models can be bought online on an as-needed basis.

Evolver PRO includes the Character Builder software, and the evolver Output Generator. This works with Autodesk Maya Complete and allows users to output final characters.

The COMPLETE version of evolver will be released at a later date, and will allow users to integrate proprietary, Maya-built 3D character models into the evolver Character Builder ancestor library.
