Coming soon: no-frills office suite for wireless devices

Office application developer SoftMaker of Nuernberg, Germany, and Windows Mobile platform-based software developer Westtek have teamed up to provide original device manufacturer (ODM) customers with SoftMaker Office solutions for mobile and embedded platforms.

“The companies plan to address the Microsoft Windows CE, Windows Mobile, Android and mobile and embedded Linux platforms prior to the end of 2008,” states the companies’ joint press release.

SoftMaker develops low-cost word processing, spreadsheet and database applications compatible with Microsoft Office file formats. In partnership with Microsoft, Westtek develops Microsoft Windows Mobile-based applications for OEM and consumer market mobile and embedded devices. The agreement will incorporate technology sharing and combine sales and support efforts.

A 30-day free trial of SoftMaker Office 2008 for Windows is available.
