Canadian IT spending to reach C$35 billion in 2003

With over C$5 billion in IT spending in 2002, the Canadian Public sector represents the second largest IT market opportunity in Canada. Providing products and services to this industry is crucial to the success of IT vendors in Canada.

At the breakfast briefing Dave Wallace, Corporate Chief Technology Officer, Management Board Secretariat, and Jamie Sharp, Research Director, Customer Segments, IDC Canada examined four key questions:

    What is the outlook for the Canadian economy & IT market?What is the magnitude of IT spending in the Canadian public sector?What are the IT and business drivers in the Canadian public sector?What is the state of technology adoption in the Canadian public sector?

Key highlights from the briefing include:

    Government is the second largest spender in IT in Canada (14%)Electronic Service Delivery (41%) and Expense/Cost-Reduction (17%) are the top program/policy prioritiesImplementation of Standards (54%), Security (46%) and Portal Technology (35%) lead technology challengesSecurity and XML-based standards will gain traction in the next 12-18 monthsTechnical expertise, customer support and price competitiveness lead vendor selection criteria
