Amazon Redshift offers budget cloud data warehouse

Amazon Web Services Inc. rolled out for general availability its cloud-based data warehouse called Redshift.

Amazon Redshift is being pitched as an alternative to costly on-premise products and its targeted at large enterprises that want to save on the cost of setting up a data warehouse in the cloud.

On-demand pricing for Redshift starts at 85 cents per hour for the High Storage Extra Large (XL) node and $6.80 per hour for the Storage Eight Extra Large (8XL) node. Storage capacity of 2TB and 16TB are also being offered along with 15GB and 120GB of RAM.

Reserved instant pricing lowers the effective price to $0.228 per hour for under $1,000 per terabyte per year, Amazon said.

Redshift is about a tenth of the cost of traditional data warehouse solutions, according to Andy Jassy, VP of Web services are Amazon. He said Redshift also automates deployment and administration

Redshift can use SSL in transit and hardware-accelerated AES-256 encryption for primary storage as well as back-up data to secure corporate data. It can be connected with a business’s existing data center using VPN channels.

The value of data warehousing

Data can be uploaded to Redshift in a number of ways. Firms can either use AWS Direct Connect to set up a private network connections at 1G bps or 10G bps between their data centre and Amazon’s ’loud, or they can use AWS Import/Export to send data on portable storage devices. The AWS Data Pipeline can also be used to import data or load data from services like S3 and DynamoDB.
